Upper Teesdale is designated an 'area of outstanding natural beauty' and includes High Force, Britains highest waterfall. The whole area is well worth a visit.

GAINFORD

Gainford is in the south of County Durham. It straddles the A67 mid-way between the large town of Darlington and the market town of Barnard Castle. It is a pleasant and picturesque old village, which slopes gently down to the River Tees in an area known as Lower Teesdale.

WINSTON

The village of Winston can be found further along the A67 towards Barnard Castle.

From the door of the parish church of St Andrews there are stunning veiws across the river Tees. The road bridge over the Tees in the village, was made famous by the TV series 'A piece of Cake' in 1988, when a spitfire was flown under its 100 ft semi-circular span at 200mph! It was seen again more recently when the same footage was used in the ITV series 'Foyle's War'.
